Is it safe to delete Core Spotlight index?

The search index for content inside apps, such as mail and notes, that apps add to Spotlight.

Managed by macOS

macOS manages it. It's never moved to the Trash.

~/Library/Metadata/CoreSpotlight

What it is

Apps use Core Spotlight to make their own content searchable, and macOS keeps that index in your Library folder, separate from the index of files on your disks. It's usually a few hundred megabytes, but some people have seen it grow to hundreds of gigabytes when indexing goes wrong. macOS creates it again when it's missing.

If it's removed

If the index is removed, searching inside apps such as Mail finds less until macOS rebuilds it.

What to do instead

Leave it to Spotlight, which maintains this index and rebuilds it when needed.

FREE

The free analyzer finds it and explains it. The app never removes it.
