Is it safe to delete Trash?

Items you've moved to the Trash. They still use space until the Trash is emptied.

Review first

It's your own data, or hard to recreate. Decide item by item.

~/.Trash

/Volumes/*/.Trashes

What it is

When you move an item to the Trash, it goes to a hidden Trash folder in your home folder, or to a hidden .Trashes folder on the disk it came from, with a separate folder for each user. The space isn't available again until the Trash is emptied. You can put items back until then, and Finder can empty items automatically after 30 days.

If it's removed

Emptying the Trash deletes its items permanently. They can't be put back or recovered afterward.

What to do instead

Check the Trash first. To empty it, click the Trash in the Dock, then click Empty, or choose Finder > Empty Trash. To empty it automatically, choose Finder > Settings > Advanced and select Remove items from the Trash after 30 days.

FREE

The free analyzer finds it and explains it, with these steps. The app doesn't remove it for you.
