Is it safe to delete Lightroom Classic previews?
Thumbnails and previews that Lightroom Classic renders so it can show your photos quickly.
Usually safe
It can be recreated, but it takes a download, a reinstall or the tool's own command.
~/
- Only next to *.lrcat
- Never inside ~/
Pictures/ Lightroom/ * Smart Previews.lrdata
What it is
Lightroom Classic keeps a preview file next to each catalog, in the Pictures/Lightroom folder by default. It holds the thumbnails and larger previews you see as you browse, and 1:1 previews can make it very large. Lightroom Classic rebuilds previews as you browse, but it needs the original photos to do so. Smart Previews are kept in a separate file and aren't part of this item.
If it's removed
Folders open more slowly while Lightroom Classic rebuilds previews. Photos whose originals are on a disconnected drive can't show previews until the drive is connected again.
How it's removed
Moved to the Trash, where you can restore it. Quit Adobe Lightroom Classic first.
The free analyzer finds it and explains it. Removing it is Pro, after a review sheet that lists every move and command. It's never checked for you: it waits for your choice.
