Is it safe to delete vendor/bundle (Bundler)?

A Ruby project's gems, installed inside the project by Bundler.

Usually safe

It can be recreated, but it takes a download, a reinstall or the tool's own command.

~/**/vendor/bundle

  • Only when it contains ruby or jruby or truffleruby
  • Never inside ~/Library

What it is

When a project is set up to keep its gems with the project, often for deployment, Bundler installs them into the project's vendor/bundle folder instead of a shared location. Bundler can install them again from the project's Gemfile and Gemfile.lock. The folder stays behind in projects you no longer work on.

If it's removed

The project won't run until Bundler installs its gems again, which downloads them and builds gems with native extensions again.

How it's removed

Moved to the Trash, where you can restore it.

PRO

The free analyzer finds it and explains it. Removing it is Pro, after a review sheet that lists every move and command. It's never checked for you: it waits for your choice.
