Is it safe to delete Logs for all users?

Log files that helper tools, installers and macOS services write in the Library folder at the top of your disk.

Usually safe

It can be recreated, but it takes a download, a reinstall or the tool's own command.

/Library/Logs/*

  • Never inside /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

What it is

Apps with helper tools, installers and some macOS services keep logs in /Library/Logs, shared by every user of this Mac. You can read them in the Console app. Logs aren't needed for anything to work, and new ones are written as needed. Most of them belong to the system, so removing them needs an administrator password.

If it's removed

The removed entries can no longer help with troubleshooting an earlier problem. New logs are written as needed. The log folders themselves stay, because some programs, including background jobs, expect them to exist.

How it's removed

What's inside is moved to the Trash, where you can restore it. The folder stays.

PRO

The free analyzer finds it and explains it. Removing it is Pro, after a review sheet that lists every move and command. It's never checked for you: it waits for your choice.
