Is it safe to delete App logs?

Log files that apps and macOS services write in your Library folder to record what they do.

Safe

Its owner recreates it by itself when it needs it, and nothing you made is lost.

~/Library/Logs/*

  • Never inside ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

What it is

Apps and services write logs in the Logs folder of your Library folder to help with troubleshooting, and you can read them in the Console app. Logs aren't needed for apps to work, and apps start new ones as they run. Some apps keep old logs until they're removed, so this folder can grow over time.

If it's removed

The removed entries can no longer help with troubleshooting an earlier problem. Apps write new logs as they run. The log folders themselves stay, because some programs, including background jobs, expect them to exist.

How it's removed

What's inside is moved to the Trash, where you can restore it. The folder stays.

PRO

The free analyzer finds it and explains it. Removing it is Pro, after a review sheet that lists every move and command. It starts checked in the Cleanup checklist, except inside Documents or Desktop.
