Is it safe to delete Claude Code conversation history?

Transcripts of your Claude Code sessions, in a folder for each project, along with Claude's auto memory notes.

Review first

It's your own data, or hard to recreate. Decide item by item.

~/.claude/projects

What it is

Claude Code saves every session here as a full transcript, including tool calls and their results, so you can resume or review past work. Each project's folder also holds auto memory, the notes Claude keeps for itself about that project. Claude Code deletes transcripts older than its cleanup period, 30 days by default, and keeps auto memory. Transcripts of sessions from the Claude app or Cowork are kept until you set a limit for them.

If it's removed

Sessions whose transcripts are removed can't be resumed or reviewed, and removing a project's folder also removes Claude's auto memory for that project.

What to do instead

Claude Code removes transcripts older than 30 days by itself. To keep them for a shorter time, lower the cleanupPeriodDays setting in Claude Code's settings.

FREE

The free analyzer finds it and explains it. The app never removes it.
