Is it safe to delete Podman machines?

Disk images of the Linux virtual machines Podman uses to run containers on a Mac.

Review first

It's your own data, or hard to recreate. Decide item by item.

~/.local/share/containers/podman/machine

What it is

On a Mac, Podman runs containers inside a Linux virtual machine. This folder holds each machine's disk image, which grows as you pull images and create containers and volumes, along with cached images used to create new machines. Removing a machine removes all the containers, images and volumes inside it.

If it's removed

The machine's containers, images and volumes are removed. Podman needs a new machine before it can run containers again.

What to do instead

In Podman Desktop, open Settings > Resources, stop the Podman machine you no longer need, and delete it.

FREE

The free analyzer finds it and explains it, with these steps. The app doesn't remove it for you.
