Is it safe to delete Docker Desktop disk image (Docker.raw)?
The virtual disk where Docker Desktop keeps all your images, containers, volumes and build cache.
Usually safe
It can be recreated, but it takes a download, a reinstall or the tool's own command.
~/
- Files only
What it is
Docker Desktop runs containers in a Linux virtual machine, and this one file is that machine's disk. It's a sparse file, so Finder and other tools can show its maximum size rather than the space it really takes up, which grows as you pull and build images and create containers and volumes. Deleting the file removes every image, container and volume at once, so space is best reclaimed through Docker, which gives it back to your Mac by itself, sometimes after a few minutes.
If it's removed
Docker's build cache is removed, so the next builds take longer. Images, containers and volumes are kept.
How it's removed
Docker Desktop's own cleanup command (docker --context desktop-linux builder prune --force), run by the app. It removes only what nothing uses, so it frees less than the full size.
The free analyzer finds it and explains it. Removing it is Pro, after a review sheet that lists every move and command. It's never checked for you: it waits for your choice. Its size counts as “up to”, because the command removes only what nothing uses.
