Is it safe to delete Rust toolchains?

Versions of the Rust compiler, Cargo and the standard library that rustup has installed, one folder for each toolchain.

Review first

It's your own data, or hard to recreate. Decide item by item.

~/.rustup/toolchains/*

What it is

rustup, the Rust installer, keeps every toolchain you install here, such as stable, nightly or a specific version a project asks for. Older nightly and pinned toolchains stay until you uninstall them. By default, rustup installs a project's toolchain again when it's missing, but targets and components you added yourself aren't restored.

If it's removed

A project that needs an uninstalled toolchain downloads it again the next time you build it. Targets and components you added to that toolchain have to be added again.

What to do instead

rustup manages these toolchains and can uninstall the ones you no longer use. Keep the toolchains your projects use.
